In the late eighteenth century, a continued fascination with classical
antiquity provided the impetus for the development of neoclassicism. Straight lines and delicate
ornament, including inlaid decoration, became the norm. Among the number of innovative forms at the
time were a lady's work or sewing table. The double-elliptical shape of a work table in Winterthur's Billiard
Room was characteristic of New York pieces. Hickory Chair Company's designers were inspired by the
circa 1800 New York work table in the creation of these Biderman Cocktail Tables.
